Dr. Jon Epstein Currently teaches in the sociology department at the University of North Carolina at Greensboro.  He received his BA (1988)  and MA (1989) degrees from UNCG and his PhD from Kent State University in 1995. In addition to teaching at UNCG, Epstein has taught at a number of colleges and universities including The College of Wooster, Youngstown State University, The University of Akron and Wake Forest University.

 

Epstein is widely regarded as a leading expert in the area of youth culture and rock music, and has served as a senior consultant to the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame since 1991.  He has published numerous journal articles and two books in the area of youth and rock music; Adolescents and Their Music: If It's Too Loud, You're Too Old (Garland 1990) and Youth Culture: Identity in a Postmodern World (Blackwell 1999).  Adolescents and Their Music was nominated for the Midsouth Sociological Association Distinguished Book Award in 1994.

 

In addition to his work as an academic, Epstein has been a professional rock musician and producer since 1984.

His Southern Rock band Last Stone Cast is signed to the Texas based independent label A&S Records.  In collaboration with new media artist Patrick Lichty (Columbia College, Chicago) and musician Sam Seawell (Music Academy of North Carolina), Epstein is also a member of Haymarket Riot ,  the first rock band to have it's work be considered legitimate sociological theory.  Haymarket Riot's first film, Machine, has shown at numerous independent film festivals worldwide.

Haymarket Riot is currently in preproduction for their third film
